You need a website, but don’t have the cash?

I know this might be a bit mad considering this is one of my businesses, and by telling people what to do I’m doing myself out of clients, but not everyone can afford it, and not everyone wants to pay someone else to do something. Also, this information is freely available online due to the system I use, so it’s really just me making life a little easier for those of you who wish to go the DIY route! I can advise you that you might not necessarily get all that you want from the site you do yourself, but perhaps you will. If you’re willing to learn and work, it will happen.

Also, I won’t get into the whole ‘good design, bad design’ aspect of things. It’s a WHOLE other area. Look at sites yourself, you’ll see what works and what doesn’t. The aim of the game is to make sure that your customers/site users can find their way around your site simply and without obstructions. You want to sell your product. Remember this is your shop-front, it has to be neat and tidy and pleasing to the eye, it reflects on you and more importantly on your business.

Ok, so firstly you need to have hosting and a domain name. Recommended suppliers are Letshost and Blacknight.

Secondly, I use WordPress as the content management system for all sites. It started off as a blogging tool, but has become one of the Internets most successful (and FREE) CMS. It allows users to do so much and gives the control back to the owner of the site. This is my whole ethos, you know your business better than anyone else, you need to have full control. It’s also empowering ;) Also, as WordPress is opensource software (aka free), all you have to do is Google a question or issue and the answer will be there, so less waiting around for you for support time, etc.

Steps:

  1. Register domain name.
  2. Organise hosting – most providers lump these two steps into one, but I’m doing it checklist style.
  3. Install WordPress – Both the above providers have an auto-install option for WordPress (as do other providers).
  4. Find the theme (template) that you want to use. This is the fun bit. You can search within WordPress’ admin area to find a theme that suits your needs and branding. You can also find them by searching Google. There are hundreds of thousands of free WordPress themes out there, the only thing is others can use them too, so your site will not be 100% unique. The other option for DIYing it is to purchase a ready-made theme that suits you, again the vast majority aren’t unique to you unless you buy it outright, and then you’re normally talking big money, as opposed to €50 or so. You can install loads of themes and see which one works the best for you. Some will allow you to insert your logo nicely, others need a bit more tweaking around, but it’s doable.
  5. Install plugins to make your life easier. I will do another post with the list of plugins I install the minute I have a fresh WordPress set up. Plugins are basically (and usually free) pieces of software that provide you with specific functionality. Everything from spell-checker to shopping cart and chat fora are available as plug-ins. Again, Google is your friend, search for reviews, and you’ll find lots!
  6. Add your content.
  7. Announce to the world that your site is up and running.

Now, there will be things you will encounter that aren’t obvious or straightforward, but there are solutions. The thing is not to be afraid. I also know you will be reading this and say to yourself: ‘sure, it’s that easy, yeah right, give us a break Anna’, I won’t lie, there will be limits if you have no knowledge of coding websites, but this is supposed to be a learning exercise to save you money. Don’t be surprised if you find after spending some time at this that you decide to hire a web designer/developer to assist you, that’s ok, you’ll be more au fait with everything if nothing else!

If needs be, I could probably be convinced to do a training session some morning or afternoon if there’s enough interest, a suitable venue is found, and costs are covered ;)

Some of the results of the work I’ve done recently. I have a few website designs also, but the sites aren’t officially live yet, so until then I will keep them secret ;)

Busy Busy!

Just like a bee ;)

I often wonder if anyone is reading my blog, so I suppose it makes me a little lazy, however I thought I had better make a few entries to cover any possibility ;)

So since the site was redesigned and I rebranded, I’ve felt much brighter about AMOSH. I feel like more of ‘me’ is coming through. Perhaps some would think I’m being daft there, but another aspect of more of me coming through is I don’t really care ;) In the nicest way possible of course! For me, it’s important that AMOSH Designs reflects who I am, and as any of you who have met or spoken with me know, I smile a lot, there’s a reason I’m known as ‘Mrs.Giggles’ on various fora and by family members and friends – I kid you know, there are friends who’s children call me Mrs.G instead of Anna!

So business wise, I feel brighter and exceptionally positive!

I’ve had some lovely clients and work in the last few months, but I’ll do another post with a roundup of designs at another stage!

Recently, I’ve had some lovely graphic design clients, and it feels SO good to present a draft design and have the feedback “that I got straight into their head and figured out what they wanted”. That’s what I love about this work!

New site at last!

I had decided WAY back before my maternity leave started, that I would use the time to rebrand AMOSH and design a new site to go along with it. Of course, like every other trade in the world, my site fell to the bottom of the list each time I had a client call for assistance or further work!

Finally, however, I grabbed some time and worked on the site. I wanted something colourful, but funky at the same point. I feel this site reflects me far more than my previous site.

As with most things in the area of design and web presence, the site will evolve, it won’t remain stagnant, so if you do pop on and notice something ‘different’ going on, it’s just me doodling and tinkering!

Also, I’m working on a few blog entries with some useful (I think, others might say useless) information. If there’s anything in particular you’d like to know more about, let me know and I’ll go and do just that :D

AMOSH Designs & the lifecycle of a butterfly!

It’s coming close to the date I come off maternity leave, and start back to work at full throttle! I decided before I went on leave that during the timeout from the business, I would give some time to thinking about it’s future and the direction I want to take it. Part of this included rebranding!

So, I figured I’d take it the whole hog, rebrand and relaunch in August 2010. I’ve spent some time working on the new logo, and I’m currently in the middle of a new site design. I also decided to set up on Facebook, as there is information I find interesting to hear about, and thought perhaps others would like to hear about it as well! I’m surprised that already, thanks to a few individuals for spreading the word of my existence, that I’ve got a number of fans!

Following all of this, I will redraft my content, and specify the new direction I am taking… Well not so much new, as redefined and committed if that makes sense.

I’m really excited about the whole process, and of course the end result!

So the new logo, well it’s made up of three butterflies. The significance behind the butterfly… Well a butterfly transforms from a caterpillar, with part of the process being contained in a cocoon. What has this got to do with web design and technical writing?? Well I personally think there’s a lot of similarities: a caterpillar, well isn’t quite as nice looking as a butterfly (to me anyway, I’m sure some might disagree). The coding behind a website isn’t so pretty looking to some either ;) – I personally love code and seeing how a bunch of text (kind of random looking) can create something beautiful. So caterpillar=coding! A caterpillar, metamorphoses to a butterfly; similarly, the code behind a website creates, what should always be, a visually pleasing (aka pretty lol) website!So butterfly=website.

Something similar can be said of technical documentation! The unorganised, and often uncreated, content is like the caterpillar. The (set of) documents created, which are usable, consistent and give added value to your business & product, are the butterfly.

What about the cocoon?? Well I liken me, Anna @ AMOSH Designs, to the cocoon! I take your caterpillar and take care of it – coding the website, or creating/updating documentation – turning it into the butterfly!

Make sense now??? I hope so! Some might wonder why the three butterflies together like a flower? Well like anything good, it takes more than one to create it! So there’s you the client, consideration of your customers, and me! All these are required to create the perfect website or documentation!
